Travel nurse per diem rates: federal FY2027 reference

The standard federal lodging-plus-meals rate is $181 a day in FY2027, for covered destinations without a separate area rate.

By Stan SedberryLast updated 2 min read

At a glance

The standard federal lodging-plus-meals rate is $181 a day in FY2027, for covered destinations without a separate area rate. These are federal employee reimbursement limits, not a promise of travel nurse stipends. A staffing agency's offer and a worker's tax circumstances determine how its actual reimbursement arrangement works.

  • Check the destination county and assignment month, not just the nearest city name.
  • A seasonal maximum is not the rate for every month.
  • Federal per diem rates do not establish that a travel stipend is tax-free.

What are the federal per diem rates?

Highest seasonal lodging plus daily meals rates; these are not year-round stipend amounts.[1]

How does a daily rate translate to a weekly reference?

At the standard rate, $113 lodging plus $68 meals and incidentals equals $181 a day. Seven full-rate days total $1,267.[1]

That multiplication is a comparison aid, not an entitlement or a tax conclusion. It does not apply first-and-last-day adjustments or prove that all assignment days qualify.[1]

Are travel nurse stipends tax-free?

The rate table alone cannot decide that. Tax-home, temporary-assignment and reimbursement requirements matter, and the written agreement is not a substitute for meeting the tax rules.[2]

Check the federal tax guidance with a qualified tax professional for your circumstances. Keep a quoted weekly package separate from taxable wages and expense reimbursements.[2]

Method and limits

FY2027 runs from October 1, 2026, through September 30, 2027. Lodging excludes taxes; Alaska, Hawaii and territories use separate federal rates and are outside this table.[1]

What this means for a travel contract

Match the work site to the county boundary, check each assignment month and ask the agency to separate base wages from reimbursements. Compare rent quotes against the amount actually offered.

Use the salary negotiation guide for the written terms. Check the nurse licensure compact guide before planning work in another state.

Data and method

Federal per diem rates, FY2027

The federal per diem rates for travel in the 48 contiguous states and the District of Columbia from October 1, 2026 to September 30, 2027: the standard rate first, then each of the 295 areas with its own rate. Each row gives the highest and lowest seasonal lodging rate per night and the daily meals and incidentals rate.

FY2027 rates (October 1, 2026 to September 30, 2027), Federal Register 2026-18439
Period
October 1, 2026 to September 30, 2027 (federal fiscal year 2027)
Method
Rows come from GSA's FY2027 rates file (FY2027_PerDiemRates_Validated090126.xlsx), which lists each non-standard area once per season. The adapter groups the seasons of each area, checks that they run back to back from October 1, 2026 to September 30, 2027, and keeps the highest and lowest lodging rate and the meals and incidentals rate, which does not change between seasons. The last column adds the highest lodging rate to the meals rate. Rates are copied as published, in dollars.

Limits

  • These are the maximums the federal government reimburses its own employees for lodging, meals and incidentals; they are not what a staffing agency pays a traveling clinician, and agencies set their own stipends.
  • A travel stipend above the federal per diem rate for the area may be taxable wages. Tax-free stipends also require a tax home that the worker is away from, as IRS Publication 463 describes. This is not tax advice.
  • Some employers use the IRS high-low method instead of these area rates: under IRS Notice 2026-60, from October 1, 2026, $329 a day in high-cost localities and $230 a day everywhere else in the contiguous states.
  • Lodging rates exclude taxes. Seasonal areas change rate during the year; the highest and lowest monthly rates show the range, not the rate in a given month.
  • Alaska, Hawaii and the U.S. territories have separate rates set by the Department of Defense and are not in this table.
