Vanderbilt Medical Center (Nashville, TN) seeks an experienced computer programmer/specialist for a human factors research group. Design, implement, and support custom databases (front and back end), research software, digital audio/video systems, and network. Perform data audits and management, develop new applications, and some video post-production. BA/BS and 4 years of programming experience (e. g. , PHP, SQL, Java, JQuery, C++). Experience with Macintosh computers, networks, databases, and A/V software preferred. Some engineering/hardware experience desirable. Nashville is a great place to live and work with a cost of living index of 90 (Average City, USA=100). Relocation expenses NOT provided.

The human factors researcher is a member of a multi-disciplinary team that seeks to apply human factors and clinical informatics skills to complex healthcare technology development and process improvement projects. Assists in creating research evaluation plans, conducting quantitative and qualitative research, and facilitating analysis and dissemination of findings.

**Key Functions and Expected Performances:**

1. **Integrate human factors methodology and research into projects**
1. Develop, modify and communicate appropriate human factors techniques to determine user behavior, preferences, and usage models needed for future work
2. Undertake human factors research and process engineering including indentifying, planning, monitoring, executing and analysis tasks for the entire project as needed
3. Conduct adverse event analysis including FMECA and FTA, event narratives and timeline analysis
4. Work with HFE faculty by providing support for various projects including user needs identification, development of user scenarios, task analysis, user interface design, safety analysis, usability testing, simulation modeling and outcomes analysis
5. Apply relevant human factors methods, communicating and feeding results back into project
2. **Demonstrate effective and proactive communication**
1. Apply effective communication skills (verbal, written, listening and presentation) to projects
2. Proactively facilitate feedback processes within the project team
3. **Prepare, develop and use appropriate tools and procedures**
1. Develop, prepare, and deploy effective field observation methods and materials
2. Prepare and use a range of design prototyping media and materials appropriate to the job and task requirements
3. Prepare, conduct, and analyze usability tests and other inspection methods to assess design safety, usability, effectiveness, efficiency, user satisfaction, and aesthetics, as appropriate for the design stage and goals
4. Prepare, use, and maintain usability inspection materials and tools including, but not limited to, portable and fixed laboratory audio-video recording equipment
4. **Demonstrate an understanding of acceptable procedures and techniques**
1. Recognize problems and suggest solutions, including problem referral
2. Assist in modifications as directed
5. **5. Report to, support, and work with human factors engineering faculty**
1. Participate as an integral and active member of the Center for Perioperative Research in Quality (or equivalent institutional entity)
2. Interact with designated supervisory human factors engineering (HFE) faculty
3. Report to, support, and collaborate with HFE faculty on research and operational projects as assigned
6. **Provide appropriate written design documentation**
1. Prepare use and usage scenarios.
2. Document and maintain a record of design evolution including design history files and other documentation required for institutional, legal, regulatory, and other uses
3. Document the results and outcomes of usability inspection and testing activities

## Basic Qualifications

Job requires Bachelor's and 4 years of experience or the equivalent.
