**Advertised Summary Job Description**

Columbia University Medical Center - Department of Surgery, Division of Thoracic Surgery, is seeking a Physician Assistant to work under the direct supervision of assigned attending physicians assisting in outpatient care. The PA will render direct patient care including but not limited to: obtaining patients' history, performing physical examinations, ordering and evaluating appropriate laboratory, radiographic and studies. The PA will make diagnostic assessments, begin management plans, and perform diagnostic, therapeutic and laboratory procedures in accordance with training. He/she will also assist the attending physician on any procedure falling within the Physician Assistant's scope of practice, initiate subspecialty consultations or evaluations, counsel and instruct patients and their families. The PA is required to have all notes countersigned by attending physician, and participate in in-service training.

Will perform history and physical examination, on new and returning patients, review patient's charts prior to surgery and highlight any deviations from normal. Will also make tentative diagnoses and decisions about management and treatment of patients, obtain, compile and record patient medical data, including health history, progress notes and results of physical examination in the electronic medical record. Will Administer or order diagnostic tests, such as x-ray, CT scans and laboratory tests, when necessary, prescribe therapy or medication with physician approval. Will perform therapeutic procedures such as, suture removal, thoracentesis, chest tube removal, under supervision of physiscian, instruct and counsel patients about prescribed therapeutic regimens, normal growth and development, family planning, emotional problems of daily living, and health maintenance. Will respond to patients questions regarding upcoming surgery and interact with referring physicians regarding new and returning patients.

Requires a bachelor's degree or equivalent in education and experience, plus four years of related experience.

The successful applicant must be a graduate of an accredited, AMA-CAHEA approved Physician Assistant program, and have current New York State Physician's Assistant license, NCCPA Certificate, ACLS and BLS provider certification, and have at least 2 years of prior ED experience.
