for University of Southern California in Los Angeles, CA

Job Description

Job Announcement

The University of Southern California (USC), founded in 1880, is the largest private employer in the City of Los Angeles. As an employee of USC, you will be a part of a world-class research university and a member of the Trojan Family, which is comprised of the faculty, students and staff that make the university what it is.

The Institute for Prevention Research (IPR) and the Department of Preventive Medicine at the Keck School of Medicine at the University of Southern California invites applications for a full-time tenure-track position at the assistant professor level. IPR includes faculty who conduct research on disease prevention with particular emphasis on behavioral epidemiology and trials to prevent substance use, addiction, obesity, and cancer among youth and their families.
IPR is seeking an exceptional candidate for the position of Assistant Professor, tenure track, with a focus on neuroscience approaches to understanding health behavior, health behavior risk, and prevention with child and/or adolescent populations. Neuroscience approaches may include emotional regulation, executive cognitive function, impulse control, mindfulness, and/or imaging applied to brain functioning. For example, the successful candidate might examine how maturational changes from childhood to adolescence might be measured through multiple techniques (imaging, observation, testing) and how these changes related to positive and negative mood states and substance use. Futher these changes may be related to specific risk factors in the environment or to genetic makeup. A background in multiple health risk behaviors is preferred, for example, obesity and substance use, or addictions defined broadly. At the assistant professor level, the candidate would be encouraged to collaborate with existing prevention researchers, as well as provide unique expertise that complements existing prevention efforts. The candidate will be expected to develop a program of research in neuroscience methods including measurement, design or field trials.
The successful candidate is expected to be well published in peer-reviewed journals, and have a history of grant funding, particularly NIH . In addition to an active research program, IPR and the department offer degrees at the bachelors, masters and doctoral level. Applicants must have a commitment and evidence of the ability to provide high quality teaching in the classroom as well as mentoring at the graduate and undergraduate levels.
The successful applicant will be recruited as a faculty member in the Department of Preventive Medicine Health Behavior Research Division. The department includes an outstanding, collegial faculty in health behavior research, epidemiology, environmental health sciences, and biostatistics. IPR is well known for the conduct of large community and school based field trials in prevention. Minimum requirements include a PhD, MD or Dr. PH with demonstration of extramural research funding. USC is an equal opportunity employer and encourages minority and women candidates to apply for this position. USC offers superb health benefits and matching retirement funds. Applicants please submit curriculum vitae and statements of research and teaching interests. Letters of reference and representative publications or preprints will be requested from finalists. Review of applicants will begin immediately and continue until the candidate is selected. Please send CV and statement to Dr. Mary Ann Pentz, Department of Preventive Medicine, 2001 N. Soto St, Los Angeles California, 90034 or by email to: pentz@usc. edu.
