Postdoctoral Research Fellow

for Rice University in Houston, TX

Job Description

### Position Information

## Position Summary

The Postdoctoral Research Fellow will be responsible for the bulk of the work on an NSF-funded research project on using computational cognitive modeling in ACT-R to diagnose possible sources of voter error on ballots. The ultimate goal of this project is to produce a tool that can take a ballot design as input and produce an assessment of possible error-causing layout features.

This project will primarily consist of constructing a family of related ACT-R models of voters and running these models on ballots of different layouts to determine what combinations of voter strategies and ballot designs lead to error. This will involve task analysis of voting, understanding visual search strategies, and solving software integration problems involved with getting ACT-R to properly see and parse ballots. There will also be a validation phase that involves the collection of new behavioral data, so skills in behavioral research are also desirable.
