The Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at the University of Virginia invites applications to fill a Professional Research Staff Position as a Research Associate. This position is a collaborative research appointment in transportation through the Virginia Center for Transportation Innovation and Research (VCTIR) (http://vtrc. virginiadot. org/), the research division for the Virginia Department of Transportation, and the Center for Transportation Studies (CTS) (http://www. cts. virginia. edu/).
This position's research focus is in the area of asphalt pavements; specifically, with a concentration on incorporating higher recycled materials contents. The ideal candidate should have expertise in performing mechanistic tests to study the fundamental properties of asphalt mixtures having high reclaimed asphalt pavement (RAP) contents and/or in-place recycled mixtures in the laboratory and/or field.
Requirements: Candidates must possess an earned Doctorate in Civil Engineering by hire date with an emphasis in asphalt pavements. Candidates must have demonstrated knowledge in performing and analyzing data from mechanistic tests on asphalt mixtures with high RAP contents and/or in-place recycled materials to include dynamic modulus and/or repeated load permanent deformation. The applicant shall demonstrate knowledge by submitting copies of relevant published peer-reviewed journal articles.
Preferred Qualifications: The ideal candidate is preferred to have experience in developing or applying novel techniques for analyzing laboratory or field-derived performance data for asphalt mixtures with high RAP contents and/or in-place recycled materials. Preference will be given to candidates with a record of publishing within these areas.
Responsibilities: The successful candidate's primary responsibilities will be to write literature reviews, develop work plans, conduct field and laboratory experiments, analyze data, write research reports and journal articles, and present findings at national and international conferences. The candidate will work collaboratively with other researchers and receive instructions, feedback, and support from principal investigators and project managers. The candidate may supervise or coordinate the work of research assistants, technicians, and others in executing projects and activities.
The position is open immediately and the initial appointment will be for 12 months with a possible one-year renewal depending on the availability of funding.
