The McIntire Department of Music seeks applications for a faculty member in orchestral conducting. This is a ranked, non-tenure-track position eligible for renewal and the Expectation of Continued Employment as defined by UVa policy (uvapolicy. virginia. edu/policy/HRM-003). Rank is open and dependent on the qualifications of the candidate. Responsibilities include serving as Music Director of the Charlottesville Symphony, teaching conducting along with other courses, and collaborating with thirteen part-time faculty who serve as orchestra principals. The Director will also work with the Charlottesville Symphony Society, support development efforts and build engagement between the Music Department, the University, and the central Virginia community.
Successful candidates will maintain the traditional strengths of the ensemble while reaching new audiences and exploring connections to academic curricula across the College. Experience in the presentation of historical repertory in conventional concert settings should be complemented by creative approaches to a variety of contemporary music, alternative performance formats, audience education, and multimedia/interactive technologies. We seek a colleague who can collaborate with our performance faculty and students to create a rich educational experience.
The Charlottesville Symphony at the University of Virginia is a partnership between the Charlottesville Symphony Society and the University of Virginia. The orchestra is comprised of performance faculty in the Department of Music, who serve as principal players, as well as students and community members. The orchestra plays several events, including a subscription series of five pairs of concerts, while seeking to provide a high-impact educational experience.
The Music Department supports a vibrant performance program featuring a range of ensembles, while offering innovative programs in Composition and Computer Technologies, and Critical and Comparative Studies.

This position will be filled in a two-year process. Review of Applications begins on October 15, 2015. During 2015-16 we will identify three finalists, each of whom will conduct a full program of the orchestra's 2016-17 season. A finalist will be named in Spring 2017.
Applicants must have a Master's in music or commensurate experience by the date of appointment, August 25, 2017; a Doctorate in music is preferred. The successful candidate will also have significant conducting, teaching, and fundraising experience.
