## Posting Summary:
ITS Network Engineering is responsible for providing a robust and reliable network in support of the research and educational endeavors of the University of Virginia. Each position within the group encompasses researching, testing and implementing technology to support network connectivity as well as providing security for those services.
This Network Engineer position provides daily operational support and administration for University core network infrastructure, including functional and empirical analysis related to its planning, design, installation and implementation.
The University's core network infrastructure is essential to the operation of University wide applications and systems including data centers and Internet connectivity. This position will work closely with senior staff and the ITS Network Distribution group to provide design and operational support of the University's wired and wireless edge network infrastructure.
Working under guidance from senior staff this position is responsible for coordinating and completing technical documentation, monitoring and managing network performance, resolving low complexity network problems, as well as anticipating and mitigating potential failures and attacks to ensure the availability and security of the University network and connected systems.
Network Engineers cross train within the team and are expected to seek assistance from more senior members and/or management when guidelines are inadequate, significant deviations are proposed, or when unanticipated problems or risks arise. Good judgment is essential as the impact of errors can be substantial, potentially affecting the productivity of students, faculty and staff university-wide.
Network Engineers work with end users, departments and vendors to resolve network capacity, hardware/software and security issues. Network Engineers are also required to participate in an on-call rotation which provides 24X7 coverage. Good verbal and written communication skills are essential to provide excellent customer service.

Basic understanding of enterprise network environments, routing, switching, wireless LAN, network security, monitoring and management hardware and software. Must have understanding of technology principles used to deliver fault tolerant, secure, scalable network solutions. ## Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
General knowledge of computer engineering, network architecture, network hardware, monitoring and management software, network protocols, network services, network security methodologies and a system scripting and/or programing principles. Must be able to research, install and maintain network equipment hardware and software as well as understand open source and/or commercial network monitoring and management systems. Must have the ability to analyze the security of existing network infrastructure, understanding vulnerabilities and risks at a basic level.
## Preferred Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
Understanding of routing and switching protocols, including ISIS, MPLS, VRF/VPLS, LACP, and Spanning Tree configurations. Experience with the following routers and switches: Juniper MX, Cisco 6500 series, Cisco 3750 series, Arista 7xxx series, IBM BNT G8052 and Nortel/Avaya 5xxx series. Operational knowledge of Cisco ASA, F5 BIG-IP (LTM/ASM/APM), Controller based wireless network systems as well as IPv6, VPN, VoIP, IDS, SIEM and bandwidth management systems and concepts would be beneficial. Ability to program in PERL in a linux environment interacting with network devices and databases and CGI web applications.
