The state of Michigan was hit the by the recession in terms of unemployment. With troubles in the auto industry, the state has the highest instance of individuals who are out of work, with 14.3 percent of the state's more than 10 million residents without jobs. Although many individuals are concerned with this statistic, there is some hope that government funding will help put people back into the working world.

Approximately 10 corporate ventures will receive a total of $156 million in tax credits from the Michigan Economic Growth Authority because of their redevelopment projects, according to the Detroit News. All of these companies are expected to create 17,321 new positions for unemployed workers.

Dow Chemical Company will receive the majority of the funding, as they plan to create a manufacturing facility to produce solar shingles. Dow will receive 461.3 million in job creation tax credits over the next 15 years. The company's project is also expected to bring in international investors, potentially creating an additional 1,275 jobs.

This credit also comes as the corporations plan to build alternative energy products. Governor Jennifer Granholm believes that these tax credits are good sign for the state's employment outlook.

"Companies are choosing to invest and grow in Michigan because we are a great state in which to do business," Granholm said in a press release. "From solar shingles and advanced batteries to boats and scrap-tire recycling, we are creating a diversified economy where firms across a wide spectrum of industries are finding success and growing new jobs."

According to Hubpages.com, the areas of the state where there is expected to be the largest job increase include Detroit, Grand Rapids and Ann Arbor, which will create a combined 11,500 careers.
