The economic crisis has resulted in many corporations cutting back on their staff in order to balance budgets. Massive layoffs have caused millions of Americans to lose their jobs, and because many companies are still not hiring, there is a large number of individuals who are still out of work. In order to stay fresh in the business world, many of those who are out of jobs are looking for temporary positions or internships in order to keep their skills fresh and show that they're being proactive in their professional lives.
Many unemployed individuals are turning up for the large number of available part-time Census jobs, as the government is planning to do a massive hiring in order to release the decennial report, according to the Washington Post.
While temporary jobs may have been the way to go for individuals with lesser degrees, this trend is no longer the case, as even people with advanced degrees and previous experience in the working world are turning to the Census for employment.
"This time around, it's a new ballgame," Wendy Button, a hiring specialist with the Census Bureau, told the news provider. "We're seeing professionals with advanced degrees taking temporary jobs part time. It's incredible."
Employment analysts tell the news provider they believe that the Census' massive hiring will help lower the national unemployment rate. It's been reported that the Census plans on hiring at least 700,000 individuals to go door-to-door surveying households about such things as education attainment, financial status and ethnicity. According to the Post, Census Bureau officials are expecting between 3 million and 4 million applicants.
According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, the current national unemployment rate is 9.7 percent with approximately 14.9 million Americans out of work.
