The human resources department in any company or organization is in charge for recruiting the best individuals to be a part of the team. Human resource workers also handle employee relations, company lawsuits, employee benefits and the training of new hires. While some of these may be daunting tasks, they are essential for successfully running a business. However, some small businesses cannot afford to retain a full human resources department, which is causing some problems with how they handle employee relations.
Modeling themselves as freelance work, some consultants are being called into small businesses to serve as their makeshift human resource manager, according to the San Diego Business Journal. By outsourcing specialists, start-up companies are not faced with paying the high salaries of an entire department and can use the consultants on a needed basis.
"Business owners are looking to outsource some of the essential business processes they have historically done in-house so they can focus their efforts on their core business functions," Lori Underwood, San Diego district manager for Administaff, a professional employer organization, told the news provider. "They dont have to be subject matter experts in everything related to being an employer."
One of the main concerns that small businesses face is compliance. As the economy continues to pick itself back up, many companies are concerned with hiring back laid-off workers or starting from scratch. Some executives are consulting with human resource specialists to determine what their hiring options are and if they have an obligation to their laid off workers.
A career in human resources can also be a lucrative position. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, human resource managers can potentially earn more than $163,000 in annual salary.
