Although the recession has caused millions of people to lose their jobs over the past year and a half, President Obama's stimulus plan has reportedly created more than 2 million jobs for individuals across the country. On the anniversary of putting the stimulus funding into effect, Obama addressed how the federal dollars have helped create jobs, and looked to specific fields to help get employment back on track.
The $787 bill that was created for spending and tax cuts has helped some industries more than others. According to ComputerWorld, as the unemployment rate decreased to 9.7 percent in January, 13,000 information technology (IT) jobs were created. Although this number may seem modest, technology insiders reveal that this is the highest number of jobs created in the field in more than a year.
Obama noted that despite these numbers still being marginal compared to the overall job market, technology will be the bright spot in terms of employment. To ensure that this happens, the president touted the importance of keeping software and technology development within the U.S., rather than focusing on international markets.
"The jobs of the 21st century are in areas like clean energy and technology, advanced manufacturing, new infrastructure," Obama said. "That kind of economy requires us to consume less and produce more; to import less and export more. Instead of sending jobs overseas, we need to send more products overseas that are made by American workers and American business."
Obama went on to add that other countries have incorporated more education for their workers, which has proved to be an effective tool. The president said he hopes to put a greater emphasis on math and science in the schools, according to eWeek.com.
According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, IT jobs are expected to grow by 17 percent by 2018.
