There are always resources and demand for careers in writing, even during times of economic uncertainty. Career paths for writers can emerge in nearly every industry as the demand for clear communication and economical thought is nearly inexhaustible. As readers around the world begin to get their news in the internet, the print industry is adapting with novel approaches to reach their audience and bring in revenue.
The World Association of Newspapers and News Publishers (WAN) recently released a report revealing that 1.9 billion people around the world, or 34 percent of the global population, choose to read newspapers every day, while 24 percent of people use the internet.
The emergence of the internet as a primary resource for information has led employment experts to predict misfortune for the print industry, noting that digital advertising revenues have been unable replace those lost to print.
Specifically, PricewaterhouseCoopers indicated that the entire press advertising industry will not exceed 8.4 billion in revenue by 2013.
Nonetheless, WAN CEO Timothy Balding has cited increases in global newspaper circulation to confirm the strength of the industry.
"Newspaper companies in the 'old' markets have embraced digital platforms and new forms of print publishing and, in doing so, have actually grown their audience reach and revenues, even while their print circulations have come under pressure," Balding commented.
A WAN survey revealed that newspaper circulation worldwide grew by 1.3 percent in 2008 and almost 9 percent over the past five years. In fact, the last half-decade saw newspaper circulation increases in 100 of the 182 countries polled.
According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, the employment of writers and editors is expected to grow by 10% in the decade leading up to 2016.
