March job openings could set a four-year high

The job market has slowly begun to stabilize after months of devastating job losses. Throughout the majority of 2009, hundreds of thousands of jobs were lost on a month-to-month basis, only to begin dropping as the year drew to a close. Many job analysts have suggested that 2010 will be a year of slow recovery, only to pick up at a faster pace in 2011. Although some job-seekers are still not seeing results, the overall picture has become a little less grim.
As many as 300,000 jobs will be added during the month of March, according to the Seattle Times. Should the number of jobs actually hit this level, it would be a four-year high in terms of career opportunities. Job openings have been beginning to climb since the beginning of 2010, with January opening the year with a 7.6 percent increase in available positions.
This also comes on the heels of the Bureau of Labor Statistics' announcement that February saw 36,000 jobs lost. While this number is still high, economic analysts were predicting nearly double the impact with a potential of 68,000 payrolls cut.
Many government officials attribute the February numbers to the bad weather that affected the East Coast. Had there not been so many snowstorms, economists believe that more construction workers would have been able to retain employment, according to the Sydney Morning Herald. Still, many are hopeful that the month of March will make up for February's losses.
"We could easily see 300,000 jobs added this month," Brian Wesbury, chief economist at First Trust Portfolios told the news provider. "I don't expect to see consistent gains of that size, but clearly March could be that number."
According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, the current unemployment rate is 9.7 percent.
