Large companies begin to add more customer service jobs
Date: 05/18/2011
All companies, regardless of their size, need to be conscious of helping their customers with everything from technological issues to payment plans. As a result, a number of firms have begun adding new customer service positions. The Grand Forks Herald reports that Amazon.com is one such company, as it plans to create 200 new full-time customer service jobs as part of its expansion to its Grand Forks, North Dakota facility.
According to the news source, Klaus Thiessen, president of the Grand Forks Region Economic Development Corporation, said that the expansion and subsequent new jobs reflects an effort by the company to establish an "anchor" in the area.
Amazon.com, which has held a presence in Grand Forks since 1999, is renting another 29,000-square-foot space on top of its current 40,000 square-foot facility, according to the news source.
City Council president Hal Gershman told the news source that 200 new customer service jobs for Grand Forks is the equivalent of 4,000 new jobs in a city with 1 million residents.
"I’m happy about this," Gershman said, adding "I think it’s a major step forward for the city."
In addition to the Grand Forks facility, Amazon.com also announced recently that it plans to construct a 70,000 square-foot customer service center in Huntington, West Virginia, which will create 200 new jobs by the end of 2014.
The Associated Press reports that construction on the new facility is expected to begin immediately, with the customer service center scheduled to be completed by the end of this year.
The center will be designed to field calls and emails from customers around the world, the news source said.
Amazon.com isn't the only major company planning to add customer service positions across the country, however, as Capital One Auto Finance also recently announced it will expand its operations in Tulsa, Oklahoma, and add 100 new jobs.
The Oklahoman reports that the company also plans to add at least six new management positions as a result of the expansion. The firm hopes to fill the new customer service and management jobs in three to six months, according to the news source.
Bob Ball, an economist with the Tulsa Metro Chamber, told the news source that the 100 new jobs would pave the way for the creation of an additional 55 positions.
