The state of California currently has the fifth largest unemployment rate in the country, with an estimated 12.1 percent of their total population out of jobs. Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger has been trying to help out his constituents by creating job programs, even reaching out to the federal government for help. The governor has stated on the record that President Obama's stimulus package helped create more than 150,000 positions for the state, but there is still room for improvement.
Governor Schwarzenegger is looking to improve the environment while helping people get jobs, according to The Desert Sun. The governor recently released a plan called the California Jobs Initiative which would include $500 million worth of incentives for companies that have green job training and hire new employees. Additionally, there would be a sales tax exemption for businesses that use energy-efficient products.
The governor said that he hopes these incentives would help companies restore their faith in the government.
"It will send a clear message to every CEO and entrepreneur and innovator that if you invest in the green future of California, then California also will invest in you," Schwarzenegger said in a press conference.
Schwarzenegger also put pressure on the legislature to quickly pass the bill, as it will add positions for people who need them.
"We must act quickly because every day the Legislature doesn't act, we lose jobs," the governor added.
Several companies in the state have begun their plans to create green jobs. Kyocera Solar recently announced they would begin manufacturing solar modules in San Diego within the next few months. Production will create more jobs for residents in addition to creating energy-efficient materials that can benefit the environment.
