Last week, the Senate passed a $15 billion jobs bill that would create tens of thousands of jobs because of tax credits and financial incentives for companies to hire out-of-work individuals. While this was seen as a positive step as both Republicans and Democrats came together, some officials believe that there is still more work needed to create careers for the unemployed.
Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid and Senate Finance Chairman Max Baucus recently unveiled a new $150 billion jobs bill that offers extensions on expiring federal programs and tax breaks, according to the Washington Post. The bill includes extensions for unemployment insurance, COBRA benefits and funding for federal highways. Still, not everyone in the Senate believes this is a good idea, as Senator Jim Bunning openly objected the bill.
Reid told the news provider that he believes this new bill will be beneficial to those who have been unemployed for a while.
"[This] bipartisan proposal that will help businesses thrive again, extend critical assistance to out-of-work Americans, extend tax relief to individuals and businesses and provide assistance to states to ensure that they can continue to provide health care to low-income families," he said.
The bill also includes a number of tax cuts that are included in order to sway Republicans to vote, such as a research and development credit, financial incentives for using biodiesel and renewable energy and funding to weatherize homes.
This bill may be able to assist Americans who have been out of work and are collecting benefits. According to Free Republic, there are currently 10.6 million American citizens who are collecting benefits. The current federal law states that former employees are allowed to collect benefits for up to 99 weeks without having a job.
