A new campaign launched today will aim to encourage Americans to contact their senators and representatives in Congress regarding the need for clean energy jobs in the country.
The Climate Protect Action Fund's Repower America program specifically seeks to urge lawmakers to pass a comprehensive clean energy and climate change bill early in 2010.
Using the campaign's website as a forum, more than 52,000 messages have been posted by Americans requesting government action to create clean energy jobs and citing personal New Year's resolutions to promote environmentalism, such as weatherizing their homes or carpooling to work and school.
According to the Repower America Campaign Manager, David Boundy, "Now is the time for senators to match the resolve of the people they represent and pass a clean energy and climate bill to create the jobs we need today."
He added that congressional action to create a clean energy economy would strengthen the country's national security and reduce dependence on foreign oil.
Campaign officials have claimed that 82 percent of voters support the U.S. government increasing investment in clean energy sources, and 67 percent support actions to limit the impact of greenhouse gasses - both of which are likely to have an effect on the economy.
A recent study by researchers at the University of California found that comprehensive clean energy and climate policies will create as many as 1.9 million new jobs in the U.S., consequently expanding the economy and increasing the average household income.
Senator Robert Menendez, a Democrat from New Jersey, illustrated the need for more energy jobs claiming that the U.S. produced more than 40 percent of the world's solar photovoltaic cells as recently as 1999. However, by 2008, the nation was responsible for manufacturing just 5 percent of all solar cells worldwide.
