Biden meets with union to defend the auto and bank bailouts

It's been more than a year since President Obama set the $787 billion stimulus plan in motion. The bill has reportedly created more than 2 million jobs throughout the country. However, it still does not meet the needs of the millions of individuals who are out of jobs. The government also offered bailouts to the automotive industry and banks as a way to cushion the financial blow, a controversial move that not everyone agreed with.
Vice President Joe Biden recently met with the leaders of the American Federation of Labor-Congress of Industrial Organizations (ALF-CIO) to defend the Obama administration's decision to bail out banks and auto companies, the Associated Press reports.
The union is petitioning for the Employee Free Choice Act, which would make it easier for workers to join a union if they chose to do so. The Act has not been able to pass as many businesses oppose the bill, causing many Democrats to hold back on supporting it.
Biden argued that had the administration not made the decision to bail out the auto industry and the banks, the economy would suffer even greater than it already has, and millions of more Americans would be faced with unemployment. Biden recently met with construction workers in Florida to talk about how there still needs to be measures taken to help out-of-work individuals.
"When you lose 8 million jobs in this Great Recession and you keep it from being 10 [million], that's no solace to the 8 million who don't have a job, man," he told the audience, according to the Associated Press. "We have to make this work. Too many people are in trouble in this country."
According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, there are currently 14.8 million Americans who are out of work.
